Day 5
Thursday, January 1, 2009

the day started on a low note as some of our friends had to stay in the hotel to rest as they were not feeling well
nevertheless, the rest of us went ahead as planned to the Mekong Region
we had to endure a 2 hours bus ride, and also a short boat trip to the destination
a view from the boat
our destination - Mekong Region
we got the chance to taste their fresh tropical fruits, and also some local snacks honey tea and some preserved fruits
brave dave!

we also sat on the "sam pan" back to the jetty from deep in the island
the river was filled with dirty water, filled with mud beneath
a "sam pan" stuck in the waters

we had lunch at the Trung Luong restaurant, where we were served with 2 special dishes we've never come across in Singapore
they are the elephant-ear fish, and also sticky rice ball elephant-ear fish
From this big to ...
this small...
after lunch, we went to the war historical museum, where we learnt about the war era in vietnam
entrace of the war historical museum
we saw the harsh conditions in which they lived in, but which they managed to cope with
in this museum, we were also treated to a water puppet show
it was rumoured to be a form of entertainment for the emperor in the past
i do not really understand the performance as it was all in vietnamese
what i saw were only fishermen and water creatures swimming around in the water
but these puppets were actually controlled by puppeteers underwater

sea creatures plaing hide-and-seek
fishermen on a boat
the puppeteers!
Next, we travelled to the handicap centre to visit them
they were busy with their own handicrafts
despite their disabilities, they are still able to work, which is truly commendable
And lastly for the day, we ate our dinner in a restaurant named "Red House (Singapore)"
it is said to be the only Singapore restaurant in Vietnam
some of us thought that we were in for a treat, with crabs and other seafood
however, they were not served
instead, some well-known Singapore dishes were served, like fried rice, sambal "kang kong", etc
we even packed food back to the hotel for the sick students
we dragged our tired bodies back to the hotel for a debrief, and also a final preparation for our "item" at the orphanage
in conclusion, Day 5 was the day where it was fun-filled with programes
i learnt many new things and it was an eye opener for some of the programmes
i really enjoyed myself that day
